Neocon is synonymous with a summer kick-off in Chicago. It is an exhilarating showcase of the latest trends in design, sustainability, and innovative products reshaping the architecture and interior design landscape. As one of the premier events in the industry, NeoCon continues to be a melting pot of creativity, bringing together design professionals from around the world to explore the future of spaces we occupy every day. Here’s a recap of the most exciting highlights from this year's event.
This year's NeoCon highlighted several key design trends that are set to dominate the industry:
1.Biophilic Design: Nature-inspired design continues to be a significant trend, with an increased emphasis on integrating natural elements into built environments. From green walls to natural light optimization, biophilic design aims to create spaces that promote well-being and reduce stress.
2.Flexible Workspaces: With the rise of remote and hybrid working models, flexible workspaces are becoming more popular. Modular furniture, adaptable layouts, and multi-functional spaces were prominently featured, offering solutions that cater to the dynamic needs of modern work environments.
3.Minimalism with a Twist: While minimalism remains a staple, designers are adding unique twists to create visually engaging spaces. This includes the use of bold colors, intricate textures, and statement pieces that add personality without overwhelming the simplicity of modern minimalistic design.
"The sunny days are definitely back, and a myriad of designers were matching the showroom decor without knowing what the show had in store. Gone were the dark suits, and in came the floral, warm neutrals, and brighter sneaker footwear this year."
Meg Boyle | Principal, Design Studio
Sustainability was a major focus at NeoCon 2024, reflecting the industry's ongoing commitment to reducing environmental impact:
1. Eco-Friendly Materials: Exhibitors showcased a wide array of sustainable materials, including recycled textiles, low-VOC paints, and renewable resources. These materials not only reduce environmental footprint but also promote healthier indoor environments. Manufacturers have voiced their stories for sustainable best practices for a long time, but we're hearing this request from more and more clients.
"Sustainability was evident throughout with new innovative materials that were more resilient and kinder to the planet. One of the installations of a felt ceiling landscape was really great and addressed the sound attenuation that is becoming more integrated into overall design."
Meg Boyle | Principal, Design Studio
2.Energy Efficiency: Innovations in energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems were highlighted, emphasizing the importance of reducing energy consumption in commercial buildings. Smart building technologies that optimize energy use were also a key topic of discussion.
3.Circular Economy: The concept of a circular economy is a recurring theme, with many companies presenting products designed for disassembly and reuse. This approach ensures that materials can be recycled or repurposed at the end of their life cycle, minimizing waste.
"I was happy to stop at the Metropolis's Sustainability Lab at NeoCon. The space was comprised of small vignettes highlighting various manufacturers and their products that are sustainable and innovative."
Rachela Schabowska | Project Designer
NeoCon2024 was a launchpad for numerous groundbreaking products set to revolutionize the market:
1.Smart Furniture: Several companies introduced smart furniture integrated with technology to enhance functionality. From desks with built-in wireless charging to chairs with posture-correcting sensors, these products are designed to improve user experience and productivity.
2.Acoustic Solutions: Addressing the growing need for noise control in open-plan spaces, innovative acoustic solutions were unveiled. These include sound-absorbing panels, modular partitions, and acoustic lighting fixtures that combine functionality with aesthetics.
3.Terrazzo Flooring: The terrazzo look in flooring is still going strong, but the new twist on it was playing with the scale. Lots of larger aggregate for a bolder interpretation is a way to reinvigorate the terrazzo trend and give it longer-lasting power in a new way.
4.Homogeneous Resilient Sheet-Goods: Flooring manufacturers are doing more exciting, design-forward looks with homogeneous, resilient sheet-goods. This type of flooring has often been associated with projects like healthcare and education for their durability but wasn’t necessarily the most exciting in terms of design options (a lot of solids, subtle textures). Now, we're seeing more design options that make this an interesting contender for designers looking for a relatively seamless look that is really heavy-duty and at a competitive price point.
"Manufacturers are doing more exciting, design-forward looks with homogenous, resilient sheet-goods."
