Culver Academy

Culver, IN

Culver Academies sought to create a state-of-the-art rowing facility that would support its nationally recognized program while establishing a strong visual presence along the shoreline of Lake Maxinkuckee. Chipman Design Architecture was brought on as Architect and Designer to develop a 24,000 square foot facility that reflects both the performance demands of the sport and the character of its setting, expressed through a steel roofline that echoes the movement of the water.

Chipman Design Architecture shaped the facility around both training and team experience, integrating Olympic-standard moving water tanks that allow athletes to practice year-round regardless of weather conditions. Supporting spaces include dedicated weight training and workout areas, along with organized storage for a large fleet of crew shells and equipment, ensuring the building performs as efficiently as it looks.

The design also extends beyond training, creating areas for gathering and connection. A second-floor alumni lounge opens to an outdoor deck with views across the lake and race course, while the Lauridsen Lobby at the main entry provides a more intimate reception space anchored by an interactive media feature.

The result is a high-performance athletic facility that balances function, identity and setting, supporting both the daily needs of student athletes and the long-term strength of the rowing program.
