The Chicago Cubs expanded their Wrigleyville campus with the addition of Maddon’s Post, a restaurant concept led by chef Tony Mantuano and Cubs Manager Joe Maddon. Building on a long-standing relationship with the Cubs organization, Chipman Design Architecture served as Architect of Record, collaborating with the local design team to deliver a new restaurant and bar that complements the surrounding development.
The design was developed to move beyond a typical sports bar, creating a space that feels polished, approachable and capable of supporting both peak game-day activity and everyday neighborhood use. Programmatically, the restaurant incorporates multiple dining zones, an open kitchen and a large central bar, requiring careful coordination to balance guest experience with operational efficiency.
Located at the base of a multi-story structure, the project required a high level of technical coordination, particularly around mechanical systems and kitchen infrastructure, including both wood-fired and gas-fired equipment. At the same time, the design needed to accommodate a high-volume environment with materials and finishes that could perform during busy periods while remaining comfortable and inviting throughout the year.
Personal expression was also a key component of the concept, with elements integrated throughout the space that reflect Joe Maddon’s interests and personality. These moments add character without overwhelming the overall environment, creating a connection between the brand, the location and the broader Wrigleyville experience.
