Chicago Blackhawks Flagship Store

333 Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL

The Chicago Blackhawks flagship store was designed as an expanded retail destination in downtown Chicago, growing the original team store into a 5,500 square foot space that could support merchandising, technology and fan engagement. The concept needed to support more than traditional retail, integrating technology, historic storytelling and flexible programming to accommodate media broadcasts, player appearances and fan engagement.

Chipman Design Architecture led the architectural design within a historic 1928 Holabird and Root landmark building, navigating a complex approval process with both the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois. The approach balanced the integration of modern retail design and technology with the preservation of the building’s historic character, creating a space that respects its context while supporting a contemporary fan experience.

Flexibility was central to the design, with movable fixtures that allow the space to adapt for events, broadcasts and changing merchandising needs. Custom elements reinforce the identity of the brand, including a lighting installation inspired by hockey skate blades that defines the clerestory stair, and suspended circular fixtures above the cash wrap that reference hockey pucks.

The store also incorporates an interactive augmented reality experience, allowing fans to engage directly with the team and share content in real time. Together, these elements create a flagship environment that blends retail, storytelling and technology into a space that easily shifts between everyday shopping and larger fan-driven events.
