The conversion of an existing skilled nursing facility into a dedicated memory care community required a careful shift in both function and atmosphere. Chipman Design Architecture worked closely with the client to navigate state requirements around security and supervision, while rethinking the environment to better support residents and staff.
The existing structure presented a number of constraints, particularly in the public areas where lower ceiling heights limited the sense of openness. Rather than trying to overcome that condition with heavy interventions, the design focused on proportion, lighting and material selection to create a more comfortable and balanced interior.
The approach moved away from a clinical feel, favoring a softer residential character. A muted palette and layered textures create warmth without relying on strong patterns or themes, allowing the space to feel calm and familiar. Key elements, including a central fireplace with stone detailing, were introduced to anchor common areas and provide points of recognition within the environment.
Design decisions were guided by how the space would be experienced day to day, supporting both resident comfort and staff functionality. Circulation, visibility and ease of use were addressed alongside material selections, ensuring that the environment performs as well as it feels.
The completed community reflects a more residential approach to memory care, where familiarity, clarity and comfort are integrated into the overall layout rather than applied as a surface treatment.
